Fergus Blog: Intentions for this page

Hello, my name is Fergus. I'm a 20-something recent graduate with aspirations to go back to university. If you've found this page, I am very impressed, unless it's reached the stage that I am comfortable sharing it on my social medias, in which case, that's not an achievement in the slightest.

I've decided to start this blog as a sort of creative outlet, but also to improve my own writing skills. I also want to use it to write book and film reviews, and maybe just to throw my thoughts out, into the internet, where it will sit on a server taking up space for the foreseeable future, gradually sucking power and warming up the planet until someone has the sense to delete the damn thing.

I'd also, once a month, like to write an article on a scientific paper, or article or book, that I have read. Or discuss something physics related. As mentioned, I'd like to go back to university to do a masters. I'm looking at photonics, which is laser physics, and/or biophysics. I won't write down the exact reasons now because this isn't an application, but hopefully the scientific articles aren't too out of place and fit the cohesive "theme" of this blog. They won't always be in those specific areas, but that's where I'd like to stick.

Part of the reason I am putting this on the internet is because I think it's scary to do that, and I want to challenge myself, but also because if I only write for myself I hesitate to think how much I will actually improve. I used to think I was cracked at writing in spite of having a writing based learning difficulty, but actually how I think my writing flows and reads is very different to how it actually flows and reads, and in order to see this, other people have to read it. Another part of this that scares me is putting something like this on the internet for anyone to come across and critique. I have a real problem with accepting that some people just won't like me or what I have to say, and maybe this will expose me to that a bit more. But I hope it doesn't, I hope most people read this and any of these posts and come away thinking they've learnt something, or I've shared a unique perspective, or maybe at least they'll thank all that is holy that they don't write as badly as I do.

But because blogging is such an outdated medium, the likelihood is that the only people who read this post and the subsequent ones are people that I actually know, so I'm sure that none of this will really be a problem.

Finally, thank you for reading this. I know I said I'm scared of criticism but ultimately it is how you improve, so if you disagree with something I'm saying or with my "creative" spelling, please feel free to say so. And this might only be read by two people, so hopefully you're both feeling chatty.

Fergus
